Association of Estonian Adult Educators honorary title Academic Act of the Year – TARTU ANNELINNA GÜMNAASIUM “Transition to Estonian language based education – TEEME ÄRA (Let’s do it)!“ (https://andras.ee/et/uleminek-eestikeelsele-oppele-teeme-ara-tartumaa)

The Ministry of Education and Research accredited Tartu Annelinna Gümnaasium with the honorary title 2023 LANGUAGE IMMERSION INSTITUTION OF THE YEAR. The last such title was given to the school in 2014. 

Class sets and the number of students at the beginning of the 2023/24 academic year: 

In primary school, 31 regular classes, 6 special needs classes; number of students: 825 (11 students less than last year) 

In secondary school, 8 regular classes, 1 Ukrainian students class, 3 vocational classes; number of students: 301 (14 students more than last year)

The Methodology council made a summary of the academic year. 

The subject departments brought out the following as the most important events:

Primary school - an experience day for teachers in Narva and a mothers’ day concert;

Estonian language teachers - E2 national olympiad 2nd place (Liisa-Lotta Taivere, supervisor Maire Küppar), a cultural history orienteering game on Toomemäe for year 6, Estonian literature day celebration;

Foreign language teachers - language day celebration, study trip to Malta, Teacher of the Year Julia Klochkova in the 2023 secondary school teacher category;

Formal sciences teachers - mathematics olympiad regional round for years 4-6 (2nd place Artjom Lilleorg, supervisors Maksim Ivanov and Anete Miller), 150 students took part of the international mathematics competition KÄNGURU, large participation in the NUPUTA mathematics competition for years 5-7, the competition “TAG rocket” took place for years 6-8 (organised by Natalja Ivanova and Maksim Ivanov);

Natural sciences teachers - activity in projects (841 students took part in the 40 study programs of the KIK project “A person is a small part of nature”, 635 students took part in the 25 programs of the green technology project “Raise awareness for green technology”), event for year 9 students of Tartu schools “Student - young researcher”, in which 73 students took part in from 10 schools and one Latvian school;

Humanities and social sciences teachers - panel discussion, cooperative lessons;

Skill subject teachers - years 1-3 mothers’ day concert (supervised by Anne Kaskman and Alla Botšarova), traditional events (Song festival, assemblies), participation in the Tartu 2024 Song and Dance Festival (preparatory and children’s choirs) supervised by Alla Botšarova, Julia Trubatšova and Ellen Strohmann, participation in 4 stages of the TV 10 Olympics starts, fashion show (Ellen Strohmann, Heidi Margus, Inna Glimbaum,

Julia Trubatšova and people from other departments);

TAG Support centre specialists - KLAPP hikes, individual career counselling for secondary school students, Free Stage (Vaba Lava), Pink Shirt Day, KiVa discussion circle “Help reduce bullying”;

Members of the department of homeroom teachers - study skills training for year 8 students and teachers (Open Mind Institute), Estonian Independence Day, also study tours, thematic parties, developmental conversations, becoming a homeroom teacher for the first time;

TAG leadership - joining the Knowledge School project brought a new and important methodical topic to the agenda - development of study skills; cooperation day during the integrated subject and language study month and other events presenting TAG teachers’ practices - open lessons, visiting schools, workshops in the Education Festival and conferences.

Students’ events

26.09 - We celebrated the European Day of Languages. Quizzes and concerts took place in all years.

28.09 - Our school’s athletic students’ representatives took part in the Jõhvi Basic School olympic day.

29.09 - Movement and Safety Day took place for primary school. Secondary school students took part in an open audition for the orchestra of the Vanemuine theatre. The orchestra was led by conductor Mihhail Gerts. 

In November, secondary school students watched the “Winter Opera” in Jaani Church.

The dictionary and encyclopaedia week took place in November. This time the week was filled with different projects. Students from years 4-9 took part in the project “Our class’ proverbs”. Year 10 students know each other better now, as they compiled a bilingual dictionary of names from their classes. In one year 12 class, an interesting 

In one year 12 class, an exciting thematic Estonian as a mother tongue lesson called “Take everything you can from the dictionary!” took place.

The most exciting, but also the hardest task was waiting for the year 11 students. Their task was to create a Russian-Estonian dictionary of terms from their research projects.

On the 27th of November, the Citizen’s’ Day assembly took place, with guest speaker Major Andrei Slabovitš, the defence force drone expert.

On the 4th to the 6th of December, the students from class G2 stayed in a training camp in Otepää and visited the Valga war museum.

On the 7th of December, a natural science game took place for the elementary schools of Tartu city and Tartu county, along with the participation of students from Valmiera 2nd Secondary School. 

On the 8th of December, our school’s Christmas tree was decorated by years 1-4 students.

The week before Christmas, Christmas parties were held for each school level.

This year, the TAG’s children’s choir took part in the winter song festival in Otepää. The choir was prepared by head conductor Alla Botšarova and Ellen Strohmann and Julia Trubatšova.

This year it was our school’s turn to organize the 2nd of February Tartu Peace speech assembly for the secondary school students of Tartu.

On the 16th of February, the European Parliament partner schools’ event took place in our school: 

The European Parliament mini simulation is a simulation developed by the Political Science Society to present the European Parliament to secondary school and the final class of elementary school students.

The recurring theme of the EV106 events was the history of the Estonian song festivals, to remember the jubilee year of the song festivals:

Years 1.– 4. parade – assembly in the school courtyard;

Years 5.- 8. – assembly in the school assembly hall;

Years 9. – 12. – procession from the Jakob Hurt monument to Maarja church and assembly in the church, with guests from the Kristjan Jaak Peterson Gymnasium students and Jaan Poska Gymnasium head of school Mari Roostik.

On the 19th of March, the Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas met with the secondary school students. 

During the second week of May, the programme of the Tartu Capital of Culture 2024 made its way to our school. Students from the Budapest Szamalk-Salezi

Technical School performed a fashion show “The Future of Fashion“ at our school. The key words of the show were Adaption-Rebirth-Change. Our school’s students from years 1, 9, and 10 presented as a warm-up performance a school themed collection of recycled materials. 

The Hungarians brought with them a paintings, mini sculptures and cuttings exhibition, which could be seen in the school lobby.

Under the management of Anne Kaskman, years 1-4 students performed at the Mothers’ Day concert.

On the 4th of June, as is tradition, we went to Otepää to celebrate the Estonian flag day. This time, the secondary school students of Tartu presented a runic song, which they prepared together, of the birth of the Estonian flag.

In June, an English language city camp was held for year 5 students, where students could develop their foreign language skills with native speakers. The camp was organized by Yulia Klochkova.

As a partner school of the European Parliament, 2 events were held for the secondary school students: EP mini simulation in autumn and a meeting with EP candidates in spring. 

TAG’s preparatory and children’s choirs took part in the Tartu song festival “Õnn ja Rõõm”. Overall, 9941 singers took part in the song festival, along with our students.

Recognition of students

Elementary school was graduated with commendation by class 9a students Jelizaveta Balandina, Agata Ehin and Sofija Gorjunova, class 9.b students Aleksander Budašov and Richard Jemeljanoviyš, class 9.c students Jelizaveta Lissovskaja and Aleksa Savchenko, class 9.d students Andrei Aleksejev and Dayna Laaneots.

Sofia Anissimova, Alelsija Kolotsei and Katrin Saks graduated secondary school with a silver medal.
